The Sultana Disaster Historic Marker commemorates the explosion and sinking of the steamboat Sultana in 1865, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in United States history. The vessel was carrying recently released Union soldiers when it exploded on the Mississippi River north of Memphis.
The marker places Memphis near the center of this national tragedy and highlights the dangers of river travel during the post–Civil War era. It connects the city to a pivotal moment in American transportation and military history.
