Fort Assumption was a French colonial fort established in the eighteenth century near the Mississippi River. It played a role in early European settlement efforts in the Memphis area and reflects the strategic importance of the river during colonial expansion.
The fort site is located near the river corridor south of downtown. Although no structures remain, the marker identifies one of the earliest known European military installations connected to the future city of Memphis.
